Maritime safety issues for the European Union

Under the aegis of the European Security and Defence College (ESDC), IHEDN's Europe and International Affairs Department organised a course on the Challenges of Securing Maritime Areas for the European Union from 1 to 4 June.

Challenges of Securing Maritime Areas for the European Union

The Department of Europe and International Affairs of the IHEDN organised, from 1er to 4 June, under the aegis of the European Security and Defence College (ESDC), a course on maritime security issues for the European Union (Challenges of Securing Maritime Areas for the European Union). This training course brought together 15 participantsA number of them have also been involved in EU missions and operations (EUBAM Libya, EUCAP Somalia, EUNAVFOR MED).

The course programme included 13 lectures and round tables, with 20 speakers, as well as the organisation of a case study on the future development of the European Union's maritime safety strategy (European Union Maritime Security Strategy).

The course began with an inaugural lecture by Mrs Marianne PERON-DOISEThe conference will be chaired by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Institut de Recherche Stratégique de l'Ecole Militaire (IRSEM), a researcher specialising in maritime strategy and security, Assessing emerging risks, threats and future challenges at sea.

Christos ECONOMOUThe course was brought to a close by the head of the unit responsible for strategies relating to sea basins, regional maritime cooperation and maritime safety within the European Union's Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, who provided an opportunity to discuss the European Union's future ambitions in terms of maritime safety, the prospects for regional cooperation in the Indo-Pacific area, the challenges facing the Baltic and Black Sea basins, the opportunities for cooperation offered by the blue economy, capacity-building aspects, with a presentation of European projects in the maritime field, and the way in which cyber issues and threats are addressed in the maritime sphere.
