While Hamas has always claimed to be an armed group operating within the framework of the Jihad, recent years have seen the armed movement seeking to establish political respectability, particularly since its seizure of power in Gaza in 2006. The atrocities committed during the recent attack on Israel therefore seem to reflect a change in doctrine. This article looks at the reasons for this.
