In 1996, the Taliban came up against a contradiction between religious and economic reasons, brought about by drug trafficking. However, the need for funding generated by the war of insurrection and the support of the peasant masses led them to adopt a pragmatic approach by setting aside this ban. After taking control of the country in 2021, the desire to reject drug trafficking remains. Nevertheless, the narco-economy is both a major source of income and has penetrated Afghan society. The Taliban themselves are now players in the industry.
