Nicolas Regaud, Bastien Alex and François Gemenne make the following observation: climate change will have a profound effect on international security and the conditions under which our armed forces are deployed. The intensification of meteorological hazards, health crises and economic and social disorders caused by rising temperatures means that armed forces will have to adapt their operating methods.
France and its NATO partners will find themselves on the front line in various theatres of operations degraded by the effects of climate change, both on land and at sea. This first book devoted to climate security sets out in detail the climate-related challenges to international defence and security that will characterise our near future. The authors provide a broad overview of the actions taken by state actors to respond to this new source of threats.
Nicolas Regaud is in charge of international development at the Institut de recherche stratégique de l'école militaire (IRSEM).
François Gemenne is a researcher specialising in environmental geopolitics and a member of the IPCC. He is the co-author of L'Atlas des migrations environnementales (Presses de Sciences Po, 2016).
Bastien Alex is head of the Climate-Energy programme at WWF-France.
