class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>For centuries, Europe's strength came from its curiosity about the rest of the world.<\/p><p>Our continent was the one that wrote history because, more than any other, it made the effort to understand otherness and elsewhere. This is no longer the case.<\/p><p>In <em>The Strange Defeat<\/em>Marc Bloch pointed out that one of the characteristic features of France in the 1930s was that it had turned in on itself. Its elites had turned in on their fantasies and their mediocre little passions. They had lost their appetite for understanding the changes in the world and, even more so, for drawing the consequences from them.<\/p><p>I am convinced that this analysis applies to Europe today.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section data-particle_enable=\"false\" began his career as a lawyer specialising in international law.<\/p><p>After serving as adviser to the European Union's Ambassador to the United States, he is now Managing Director for Europe of the geopolitical consultancy McLarty Associates.<\/p><p>He also teaches international affairs at Sciences Po and is the author of two books published by Gallimard: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallimard.fr\/Catalogue\/GALLIMARD\/Hors-serie-Connaissance\/Journal-d-un-jeune-diplomate-dans-l-Amerique-de-Trump#\"><strong><em>Diary of a young diplomat in Trump's America<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (2018) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallimard.fr\/Catalogue\/GALLIMARD\/Hors-serie-Connaissance\/Henry-Kissinger\"><strong><em>Henry Kissinger, the European<\/em><\/strong><\/a>
