The recent Taiwanese elections saw a shift in the political divide. It is no longer a question of being for or against union with China, but for or against a dictatorial system or war. The divide has changed because the supporters of independence have obtained the desired institutions for Taiwan and the position of unification no longer seems realistic. The development of a Taiwanese identity that is distinct from that of China has also contributed to the overcoming of this debate. The opposition is now between moderates vis-\u00e0-vis China, with the fear of invasion in the event of too much tension, and those who consider that they must protect themselves from an imperialist and dictatorial power and therefore conduct the policies necessary to preserve their independence.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
