This is the central question guiding the collective work La France et l'OTAN depuis 1989 (SUP, 2023), edited by Olivier Forcade.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Although it is the United States' oldest ally, France has never ceased to question the future of NATO. Since the end of the Cold War, the issue of security in Europe has been at the heart of the strategic and diplomatic dialogue between Europeans and Americans on the future of the Atlantic Alliance, though not without differences of opinion. At a time of conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Europe's defence is being conducted within NATO. While the majority of its neighbours are in favour of the Atlantic dynamic, France has made its Europeanisation one of the main thrusts of its foreign policy since 1991. In Bosnia-Herzegovina from 1995 to 2004, in Kosovo in 1999 and in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2014, France took part in NATO missions until its return to the integrated command in 2009. A study of the years 1989-2022 sheds light on the stages and questions surrounding France's role in the Alliance, which are discussed here by diplomats, military personnel, historians and legal experts.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e950984 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e950984\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Olivier Forcade<\/strong> is Professor of Contemporary History of International Relations at the Faculty of Letters, Sorbonne University. His work focuses on the history of the international system and international relations in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the history of conflicts, including the Great War, and the history of intelligence. He recently published La Censure en France pendant la Grande Guerre (Fayard, 2016) and, co-edited with Bertrand Warusfel, Le Droit du renseignement (LDF, 2019). He is the director of UMR SIRICE 8138.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Beno\u00eet d'Aboville<\/strong> is a diplomat. After posts in Washington and Moscow, he served as French ambassador to Prague and Warsaw, then as France's permanent representative to NATO (2001-2005). He has published numerous articles and studies on NATO and the European Union (EU), nuclear policies and the legal and strategic issues surrounding strategic armaments in Commentaire and Revue D\u00e9fense Nationale.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Serge Sur<\/strong> is professor emeritus of public international law at the University of Paris II, a member of the Acad\u00e9mie des sciences morales et politiques (ASMP) and editor-in-chief of Questions internationales. His work on international relations has been the subject of numerous books and academic articles.
