The new edition of the Year of National Defence (ADN) offers, as it does every year, a fresh look at the major strategic changes of our time. Through contributions from experts from the academic and operational worlds, this collective work deciphers the main contemporary events impacting the defence and security of France and Europe. Each edition explores specific themes in line with current geopolitical, technological and regulatory changes.

The year 2024 has been marked by profound upheavals: the American election, the war in Ukraine, tensions in the Middle East and the redefinition of France's presence in Africa. More broadly, international balances, military alliances and the role of multilateral organisations are undergoing rapid change, while new threats are emerging: disruptive technologies, foreign interference, disinformation campaigns and so on. It is against this shifting backdrop that the third edition of L'Année de la défense nationale (ADN), entitled "Strategic Uncertainties", is being published. True to its ambition, the book brings together analyses by civilian and military experts to shed light on the major developments in defence and security over the past year. Each contribution is based on reference documents, giving readers a better understanding of the issues and enabling them to form their own opinions. The launch evening will be an opportunity to discover the book and to talk to several of its authors. It's a great opportunity to take a step back from current strategic issues and reflect together on the challenges ahead.

The aim of this new edition of the Year of National Defence (ADN) is to understand how France and Europe are facing up to strategic changes by deciphering major contemporary events. The articles, written by leading specialists, reflect both an academic and a practitioner's perspective on major defence and security issues. The book has a number of aims, including explaining how France and Europe perceive their international environment and analysing the impact of the main recent technological and regulatory innovations.
ADN 2024 puts into perspective a selection of major events that took place in 2022, the effects of which will have a profound and lasting impact on the development of defence and security issues beyond 2023. These events are systematically accompanied by a reference document, a founding speech or an official statement, and are analysed in an educational and synthetic way by the best specialists in the field.
