Is the reinstatement of military service a response to the crisis of cohesion that is gripping French society? And does it really strengthen society's understanding of the logic of war and its role in national defence? These deeply held convictions are debated by Bénédicte Chéron in Mobilise. Reinstating military service: the great misunderstanding. The historian analyses the political issues underlying the mobilisation of a society and shows how a mythology of military service runs the risk of obscuring these issues by setting up the army as the answer to all crises.
Bénédicte Chéron is a professor of contemporary history at the Institut Catholique de Paris and a member of several scientific councils (including IHEDN, LRD de l'IFRI and ECPAD). She specialises in military-society relations and the representation of the military, as demonstrated by her thesis on the films of Pierre Schoendoerffer. She has published The little-known soldier. The French and their armies: an overview (Armand Colin, 2018), as well as numerous articles and contributions in collective works and scientific journals.
