In the fight against non-state armed groups, a key tactic remains the incapacitation of their leaders. There are many contemporary examples: Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri, the successive leaders of Al-Qaeda, eliminated by the United States in 2011 and 2022. More recently, Israel has targeted several leaders of the Palestinian Hamas and the Lebanese Hezbollah.
