Discovering defence institutions and issues :

The two majors explored the operating and decision-making mechanisms within the European institutions and NATO. The aim of this mission was to clarify France's position within these bodies and to illustrate its capacity for negotiation and influence. The auditors were thus able to grasp the major issues and challenges relating to defence and security, as perceived from Brussels.

Fruitful meetings and exchanges:

The delegation had the opportunity to attend various speeches and conferences, notably at the Council of the European Union, where crucial subjects such as European defence, EU foreign policy and the implementation of the Strategic Compass were discussed. The audience met representatives of the European defence industry and renowned experts, offering a comprehensive view of current strategic issues. The visit to NATO headquarters was the high point of the mission, offering the auditors an immersion in international security issues and the dynamics of the Alliance. During this visit, the auditors had the opportunity to attend a speech by Marie Doha-Besancenot, Deputy Secretary General for Public Diplomacy. Exchanges with several deputy permanent representatives from member countries such as Romania and Poland helped to improve understanding of the positions and interests of other NATO members.

This mission to Brussels was therefore a valuable opportunity for the IHEDN auditors to provide food for thought on the new balances in national and international defence and security, in a constantly changing geopolitical context.
