Organised within the framework of the European Security and Defence College (ESDC), the course entitled "The challenges of maritime security for the European Union" began on Tuesday 5 April in Brussels, bringing together participants from the European institutions and EU Member States.
Marianne Péron-Doise, researcher in North Asia (Japan-Korea), strategy and international maritime security at the Institut de recherche stratégique de l'Ecole militaire (IRSEM), opened the series of conferences on the EU Maritime Security Strategy (EU MSS). This was followed by a joint analysis by experts from the Royal Netherlands Navy and DG MARE (European Commission) of European maritime policy, the latest updates to the EU MSS and the contribution of the newly adopted Strategic Compass to maritime security issues. The afternoon was devoted to EU action in specific regions: the Indo-Pacific, the Baltic and the Black Sea.
Prepared and run by the IHEDN's Department of Europe and International Affairs (DEAI), the aim of this three-day seminar is to contribute to the development of a common strategic culture within the Member States and institutions of the European Union in this field, where cooperation is particularly essential.
Hosted by the European Security and Defence College (ESDC) in Brussels, the "The Challenges of Securing Maritime Areas for the European Union" course has started on Tuesday 5th April in Brussels and gathered together civil servants and military from the member states and from the EU institutions.
Mrs Marianne Péron-Doise, researcher for North Asia (Japan and Korea) and International maritime security at the Institute for Strategic Research at the Military school (IRSEM), has opened a cycle of conferences dedicated to the EU Maritime Security Strategy (EU MSS). The opening speech has been followed by a depth joint analysis by experts from the Dutch Royal Navy and from the DG MARE (European Commission). They presented the EU policy in the maritime domain and, the last updates of the EU MSS as well as the assets of the EU Strategic Compass for the EU global maritime strategy.
The second part of the first day focused on EU actions in specific area of interest: Indo-Pacific region, Baltic and Black sea regions.
Organised by the Department of European and International Affairs of the IHEDN, the seminar's goal is to contribute to the development of a common strategic culture among the members states and the European institutions this topic for which cooperation is crucial.
