Pau welcomes the 240e session in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region

From 19 to 22 November, Pau hosted the second week of training for the 240th session in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. The participants plunged into the heart of the French defence system, with an approach combining theory and practice. Committee work provided an in-depth look at the strategic issues at stake, offering real-life situations.

The week began with an emotionally-charged remembrance sequence, with a visit to two emblematic sites in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region: the Musée des Parachutistes and the Musée de la Résistance et de la Déportation. These landmarks gave listeners an opportunity to explore the legacy of paratroopers in French army operations, and to reflect on the horrors of the Occupation between 1942 and 1945. Colonel Achille Müller, an emblematic figure of the Free French Forces, captivated the audience with his vibrant accounts, unanimously praised, which deeply enriched this historical experience. A memorable immersion for the 240th regional session of the IHEDN. To immerse the audience in the missions and activities of the armed forces, a visit was organised to the Land Special Actions Command (CAS), accompanied by a dynamic presentation of the capabilities of the 4th special forces helicopter regiment and the specific and complex firing training centre. These demonstrations, designed to illustrate the expertise and operational commitment of these units, attracted a great deal of interest.

During the rest of the week, the issues of sovereignty and the development of the defence industrial and technological base took centre stage. The auditors were welcomed at SAFRAN Helicopter Engines, where the challenges linked to industrial sovereignty were discussed in depth. A tour of the workshops highlighted the importance of state-of-the-art industrial facilities and specialised skills. The following day, TotalEnergies' Jean-Féger Scientific and Technical Centre unveiled its research and innovation work. After highlighting the Group's ambition to develop renewable energies, the audience explored impressive infrastructures, such as the Pangéa 4 supercomputer and the carothèque, revealing the technological challenges of a major energy player.

Sub-prefect Samuel Gesret, Secretary General of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques Prefecture, representing Prefect Julien Charles, welcomed the auditors to the Villa Sainte-Hélène for a rich exchange on the specific features of the State's action in the department. Applying the Chatham House Rule, he answered the auditors' many questions frankly and transparently, shedding valuable light on local challenges and priorities. This interview fully satisfied the audience's curiosity, marking a key moment in the session.

Conferences led by defence experts punctuated the week, offering in-depth analysis of current strategic issues. After a detailed look at the budgetary implications of the 2024-2030 military programming law, the specific challenges facing the various armed forces were explored, sparking a rich exchange of views and precise answers to the audience's questions. The discussion then turned to new areas of conflict, such as cyber, before focusing on building stronger international cooperation with partners such as the United Kingdom.

After this immersion in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region, listeners will enjoy a week's break before meeting up again in Bayonne on Tuesday 3 December for the rest of their programme.
