China and the lands of Islam

Relations between China and the Muslim world go back a long way. It has given rise to empires and acculturation phenomena that have shaped Eurasia and the Middle East. While European modernity has profoundly altered the global balance of power, it has not been accompanied by the westernisation of these societies. These convergences in no way preclude rivalries or alliances that are sometimes antinomic, which bear witness to an inexhaustible pragmatism and preclude a bipolar geopolitical vision pitting a world associated with the United States against an aggregate of non-Arab Muslim states playing the Chinese card.
