The crisis of multilateralism in international relations
Multilateralism refers to peaceful cooperation between at least three states within a jointly defined framework. The United Nations is the best-known embodiment of multilateralism, but it is not the only one. Security, trade, human rights, criminal justice, digital technology, the environment, health: no area now escapes the multilateral effort. Yet the various frameworks and regimes that have been set up are in a bad way. Multilateralism is currently experiencing a multidimensional crisis, reflecting a world in tatters that is still searching for a new collective impetus.
