The United States and Russia have long been at loggerheads. Lincoln was already criticising the Tsarist regime, and the Cold War has of course contributed to the formation of myths on both sides. For the United States, Russia is an imperialist country that is fundamentally authoritarian and anti-democratic. Russia, on the other hand, sees the United States as an imperialist power that surrounds itself not with allies but with vassals and seeks, through a falsely liberalist agenda and international institutions, to impose its views. Each of these visions is in fact far more complex. In the author's view, it is important to question these visions without glossing over Russia's responsibilities in the conflict, in order to find a way out.
