What obstacles have you faced as a woman in the course of your career?
I chose to join the military at the age of 19. I realised quite quickly that entering, staying and wanting to progress as a woman in a man's world was not a smooth ride.
I had to argue quite regularly, justify my choices, demonstrate my motivation and persevere. I didn't want or need a man's job, I wanted and want to aspire to interesting positions or positions of responsibility for which I feel I have the necessary skills and qualities.
I never wanted anyone to dictate my choices.
How can we ensure that women feel legitimate enough to start a career in the defence industry?
Defence is not a domain reserved for men. When we think of defence, we think of war and the military. Women have been taking part in wars for a long time, but above all the world of Defence is vast. It offers a wide range of commitments. Women have their rightful place in it, as citizens who want to get involved for their country. This is true in every country.
Are you in favour of positive discrimination?
It's a difficult question, because I'd like to give a blunt "no". I'd like us to choose women for their skills, for what they bring to the table, for their qualities.
Even then, they would have to be part of the pool from which we look for candidates for certain positions. Added to this is the fact that some women put the brakes on themselves, fearing that they are not up to the job or cannot take on everything.
So yes, I'm in favour of positive discrimination, but in a measured way. We mustn't unbalance the system, but we mustn't deprive ourselves of talent. So when a female candidate comes forward - and we also need to encourage this - we need to pay particular attention to her, without denying the needs expressed for the position.
You have the right to want it all! A fulfilling professional and personal life! To achieve this, women need to have confidence in themselves. We need to help them do this, probably through mentoring and coaching.
Personally, my family and friends have always supported me, and I've had a few male sponsors who have helped me to imagine a career path in line with my desires and profile.
Belonging to a network for exchange and debate can be a tool for finding keys or measuring the "possible".
